Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) is a government-sponsored research institute responsible for establishing government policies and performing R&D to enable convenient, safe, and high-quality land development for the nation. Since its foundation, the institute has achieved outstanding research outcomes that contribute to addressing the nation’s pending projects and social issues. In the area of highways, it has developed and is currently operating an intelligent traffic system and facilities maintenance system targeting major national infrastructures such as roads (pavement), bridges, and tunnels. For water resources, the institute is devising measures to reduce flood damage and droughts while also establishing long-term and comprehensive measures to manage water resources. In addition, it has successfully completed a master plan for the Four Major River Restoration Project. Meanwhile, the institute is focusing on the development of low-carbon and low-energy green homes and ecological urban technologies to ensure environmentally-friendly construction, while also studying techniques to address disasters such as floods, earthquakes, building fires, and events that are related to public safety. KICT has established "KICT 2020", mid and long-term development plans, to realize dramatic qualitative growth based on its quantitative growth.
The plans include 5 strategic goals and 7 major research projects being pursued to address the main issues of the Korean construction industry, to reflect the national policy basis of low-carbon, green growth envisioned by the government, to enhance the public’s safe living, and to establish KICT’s identity as a government-sponsored research institute. KICT will continue to advance its human resources, nurturing its workers to become expert-level professionals while striving to advance its research infrastructure and strengthen competitiveness by inviting internationally renowned figures. It will also help provide top-notch living conditions to the public by establishing large-scale demonstration facilities such as the SOC DIET Center and securing advanced equipment for experiments. Moreover, the institute will allocate a significant level of research efforts to studying futuristic, environmentally-friendly technologies including extreme technologies for climate change and housing technology for low-energy consumption. KICT will take the lead in raising the status of Korea’s land and infrastructure technologies to a world-class level, through ceaseless development of advanced construction technologies and internal innovation.
